5th Odysseus--character revealed by Circe

In your pods today, please brainstorm answers to these questions. After you've come up with ideas, please post them to the blog. If there's time, please respond to other people's ideas, too.
  1. What new impressions of Odysseus did you get from this part of the story?

  2. In what ways is Circe a danger to Odysseus and his men? Is she more or less dangerous than the Cyclops? Support your opinion with text from the epic.

  3. Eurylochus' character contrasts sharply with Odysseus' in this episode. What aspect of Odysseus' character are revealed through this contrast?
    *Consider:
    ~how each feels about Circe
~what each wants to do after Cice has transformed his first group of men
    ~how Eurylochus criticizes Odysseus
~how Odysseus reacts to Eurylochus' criticism

  4. What heroic (or anti-heroic) qualities does Odysseus reveal in this episode? Explain your thinking.

  5. As a metaphor, what does Circe suggest Odysseus needs to learn or overcome?

    2. She has mysterious powers and will strike at any moment without warning. She is just as dangerous as cyclops because like cyclops, she has the strength and power.

    3. Eurylochus is more cautious than Odysseus.

    4. He will be willing to do anything to save his men from Circe.

    5. Temptation

1.We think he gained trust for others and is loyal to his men but he lost trust in himself in a way because he cheated on his wife
2.Circe is dangerous in a different way because she seduces men and is more of a mental/mind controling threat
3.Eurylochus thinks before he acts where odysseous just acts and doesn't actually think before. He is also more fearful of everything including Circe and does not want to go back to her castle to save the men. E puts O down to lessen his confidence so he wouldn't go. O Reacts by doing exactly what E told him not to do.
4.Heroic: He goes to rescue his men and save them
Anti-Heroic: He doesn't listen to his men and he cheats on his wife
    5. She thinks that he needs to overcome the cockiness of knowing everything

  4. 1.) He is easily tempted. He is rash and rushes into situations without thinking.

2.) She can turn the men into animals and can seduce Odysseus. This leads them to losing track of time.

She is just about as dangerous as Cyclops, because she can still kill them or effectively dispose of them just as well as Cyclops' brute strength.

3.) Eurylochus was much more cautious then Odysseus and thought through everything better than Odysseus. This leads you to think that Odysseus might not be as good of a leader as Eurylochus. Odysseus likes Circe more than Eurylochus. Eurylochus views her as an evil witch, whereas, Odysseus eventually ends up in her bed.

4.) One heroic characteristic that Odysseus displays is his loyalty to his men. He will try to save them, no matter what it costs him. An anti-heroic action that Odysseus displays is how easily distracted and tempted, which leads to the burial of his ship.

5.) Circe represents temptation. It shows that he must overcome temptations, like the temptations that he and his crew might later face when confronted by the sirens.

  5. 1. He still has good intentions but will do what he needs to protect his men
    2. More because she kept them there longer and seduce Odysseus "You have been here more than a year even though it only feels like a day."
3.Trust is revealed when he eats the poison from the person that he didn't know
    4. Unheroic because he gives into the god and forgets about his wife.
    5. How to keep track of time.

  6. 1. Odysseus is loyal to his men but not loyal to his wife because he slept with Circe. This makes me question his character and his ethics.
    2. She is a witch and is very clever. Women are mens weakness so she is able trick them into doing things for her. I think she is more dangerous because of her powers and the cyclops is dumb but is physically strong.
    3. Eurylochus tries to help Odysseus but Odysseus always picks the opposite. They see different points of view. They butt heads a lot but they still work together.
4.I believe that Odysseus is heroic in this episode because he saved his men but he is anti-heroic because he didn't stand for what was moral or helpful to everyone.
    5. Circe wants Odysseus to forget his at home life and stay with her.

  7. 1)Odysseus cares about his men, he is really careless when it comes to Circe.
2)Circe makes Odysseus forget about him men. She is more dangerous then the cyclopse because she knows his weakness. She makes 5 years go by with Odysseus thinking it is only 5 days.
3)Odysseus likes her, but Eurylochus doesn't like her.
4)Heroic- shows courage towards men for going to loom for them
Anti-Heroic- spent 5 years with Circe, so he was really careless
    5) THE MEAPHORE would be that he must remenber nhis wife and not be seduced.

  8. 1. Odysseus is loyal to his friends and men, but not loyal to his wife and family.
    2. She is a clever witch, and she is a women, which is mens weakness, so she can trick them into doing things. Also, she can make time fly and make it seem like 1 day is 1 year. I think she is more dangerous because of her magic powers to control the men, and the cyclopes is just physically strong.
    3. Eurylochus tries to help Odysseus, but Odysseus doesn't listen. They see different points of view. They argue alot ut still owrk together.
    4. Odysseus is heroic because he faces Circe and rescues his men. He is anti heroic because he didn't stand for what was moral or helpful to everyone.
    5. Circe wants him to stay with her and forget about his home life.

    1. Our new impressions of Odysseus is that hes caring about his men. But, hes easly tempted because he was tempted by Circe.
    2. Disagreement because half of us say she is more dangerous because time passes faster and things can be changed. Others think that the cyclops is more dangerous because he killed people and his father is Posiden.
    3. Eurylochus is protective and isn't fooled. He tends to be black and white.Oddysseus is more creative. We think if he was with Circe he wouldnt have been tempted and would have thought of a different plan. Eurylochus he stood his ground and didnt let the group kill the pig/man.
    4. Oddysseus is tempted easly by the goddess. But he will almost do anything for his men.
    5. Oddyssues is tempted and needs to overcome it.

    1. We the people, think that Odysseus is a pig because he has a wife and after seeing this grueling scene, we are disgusted with him. Epic heroes should be loyal in every way but he wasn't.
    2. Circe is a danger to Odysseus and his men because...we almost finished, sorry :(

our new impreesion of him is that he falls into what other say really easily just because there a god. And we think he needs to use his head more and go with his gut feeling then do what the gods tell him todo; because hes been listening to them and getting himself in trouble all the time.

we think the circe is dangerous to O. and his men, because she is using seduction on him so he won't want to leave and since she also controls time, he doens't realize how long hes been in the castle. what he thinks is five days is five years in reality.

we think he feels a little bit guilty for what he has done with her, and we think that he is thinking about his wife the whole time he is with her instead of actually thinking about circe.

he was very anti heroic in this episode because he slept with circe, and betrayed his wife, whom in which is still waiting for him to return home to her. he should of just left after the first time, after all his men were changed back to normal and went home.

she a metaphor for his inability to stay loyal to one woman (his wife), and she says why do you think your wife would stay loyal to you now, and not be married to another man by now. this is a good point, because hes been gone so long and has already slept with other women.

    1) He was tricked but the goddess.
    2) She can turn his men into anything. She can keep the men there for years with them thinking it would only be a couple of days. Circe is more dangerous then the cyclopes because she has more powers and psychological abilities. She can do anything she wants. "If you come lay with me, your men will return normal."

  16. 3) Euroylochus tries to help Odysseus, however, Odysseus disagrees with what ever Euroylochus says but they still work as a team.
    4) Odysseus easily gives into whatever the goddess tells him to do.
    5) Odysseus is very tempted by the goddess.
