In the movie, City of Ember, there is so much concern about the future because all they know is what they have and anything beyond that could create conflict or bring up the possibility of the destruction of the human race.

The reason why there is so much concern about the future is because we don't know if technology will take over the future, or us or if we'll be surrounded by just buildings, no sun, no air, no blue sky!

I believe there is so much concern about the end of the world because it is deeply engraved in all cultures of the world. They fear the end of the world because they don't know what is going to happen. That is why there are so many stories about the end of the world, but they are all very different.
