6th--Equality's "This I believe"

Think about the "This I believe" essays we've heard, and the ideas you read about in Anthem. In thinking about Equality,
1. What would you say he believes?
2. What has he learned about life and how does this influence his beliefs?
3. Jackie Robinson said one must be willing to fight for what is good. What is Equality fighting for? Will it be a losing fight, do you think?
4. What will sustain him in his fight?
5. What will he do for others, do you think?
6. What other questions do you have, from your reading last night?

  3. he as learned that there is more to life then just his brothers. he has learned that you can be an individual. he now believes that it is good to be an individual and live for himself

  4. I infer that the men who worked for the Home of the Inventors created the candle...
Or, it was a left-over secret from the Unmentionable Times?

  5. how bad is equalitys punishment for breaking many rules like walking in on the scalers and making power?

  6. I think there aren't any beasts in the forest. I infer that the council is using the beats as a legend to keep the people in the community.

  7. I would say that equality believes in freedom and basic rights to choose stuff and preference

He learned that there is much in the world to be learned like electricity and that makes his thirst for knowledge greater

Equality is fighting for freedom and i think he will win

His wanting for freedom and knowledge will sustain him

he will sacrifice himself to share his ideas with them

why weren't the scholors amazed bby his light or why didn't they take his idea and clame it as there own???

  8. 1. I think he believes in being individual and pushing yourself to the best of your own personal ability. He is an individual now and he is trying to show people that it is okay to be yourself, even if he gets in trouble for his beliefs.
    4. I think that self-motivation will sustain him and keep him going. I think he is smart enough to know what he is doing is right no matter what the laws say. He is very admirable and he knows he must change the way the government is run and give everybody a fair chance at being whoever they want to be.
    5. I think he will go as far as giving his life if he knows he has proven his point. I think he will do anything just to make others realize what he has discovered. He just cares about telling people about what he now knows.

  9. Will anyone like Equalities invention?

  10. He believes in individuality. He believes in making his own decisions and he believes in standing up for himself.

  11. He believes in what he thinks is right. Equality doesn't want other people from keeping him from learning more and more each day, so he can learn himself. He wants the society to change and he thinks that he can change it to help people learn more. Equality was curious about the tunnel so he kept going back to it. He invented electricity. Maybe he thinks that if people find and invent new things, what will the future for them be like? Equality believes in knowledge.

  12. 1.I think he believes that you should be free do say or do whatever you want to be a free person in his country.
3.Equality is fighting for to be able to be who he wants to be not what the government think he and everyone else should be act and talk all the same.
    5. he will be not just fighting for him but for everyone the street sweepers to the scholars to have a free right.

  13. Equality is fight for what he believes and for his rights. I think that this is a loosing fight because he does not have many people on his side. I think that there are more people who want to follow the rules then there are willing to break them to fight for what they believe in, because they are afraid of what will happen to them.

  14. Equality believes in being an individual, he also believes in being someone who moves forward. Ex: the new light source for the city. Equality has learned that in life being intelligent is a key to survival. and he believes that man kind needs to move forward and out of the dark ages.

  15. the people from the institution house did create the candle right?

  16. You've all done a good job of noticing his thrist for knowledge. I think the curiosity factor is crucial because he wants the freedom to pursue his own desires, hence the individuality component.
Here's my question...does he value love over knowledge?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think Equality believes in knowledge and thinking of new things.

  18. Joe..i think people will like his invention but are afraid of what will hsappen if they are caught with it.

  19. 1.I say that equality believes in being individual and is willing to do what ever it takes to do so.
2.He has learned that there is so much more to live than what it is known by the rest of his society and this influences his beliefs to discover, ask questions, and experiment.
    3. Equality is fighting for the right to be individual and learn and discover. It is a losing fight so far, but i think in the end, Equality won't give up and he will get what he was fighting for.
    4. Equality will stay sustained in this fight because he strongly believes in being himself, and i don't think Equality will like being on his own for much longer, so he might come back and fight for what he truly wants.
    5. I believe that he will come back and win the battle of making everyone themselves and being able to say I!

  20. will equality make more inventions or get removed from the land or what is going to go on with all the scalers?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. i think equality believes in knowledge and freedom.
    2. he learned that what he thinks is best and what the council thinks is best is two totally different things.
    3. equality is fighting for knowledge and individuality. i think i will be a losing fight.
    4. i think the golden one and his light bulb will sustain him
5.i think he will try to enlighten them.
    6. what will happen to equality? where will he end up? why didnt the council accept his light bulb?!?

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. i think equality believes in freedom and his own rights, he wants to be able to pick what to do and not let people pick for him.
    3. he is fighting for freedom and i think he will win because everyone will go on his side for freedom and a new start.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1)Equality believes in individualism, but against his will. He longs to follow the rules of the society, and feels guilty every time he breaks them, but he cannot bring himself to follow the rules.
3)Equality is fighting for the right to be his own master, and not do anything for the group, or the great "we". He wants to make his own decisions and express himself. this will be a winning fight because he has a strong enough will to continue his fight at all costs, and lives in a society that is too fearful to stop him or even believe he can be doing such "outlandish" things.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. He believes that there is more to this world and that he is his own person. Also that he is intelligent.
    2. He has learned that there is more to life and that he can liveit however he wants to. It influences how he thinks he should live and thathe should have free will.
    3. He fighting for his freedom and fighting to be recognized as an individual. Well its not looking so good right now but I think he will figure it out and no he won't lose.
    4. The fact that he knows he is intelligent and that he knows its wrong that htey are treeted that way.
    5. I'm not sure he will do much for others becuase he is running away so he might not e able to convince anyone of what is going on in the place he lived.
    6. Why is it such a crime that he was intelligent and made the light box? it would revolutionize that country. Not hurt it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Equality wants to be his own individual weather it means breaking a law or not. He's different from the rest and thats okay with him even if he's the only one. He wants to change the world.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Equality is fighting for knowledge. He knows that the council is hiding something because he found the light box in the tunnel. He is fighting to know what the unmentionable times were like. He is fighting for this because he is curious. I think Equality will win the fight if he is dedicated enough. I think if he can talk to people who then become curious as well he can win and learn more about the light box and keep discovering new things.

  27. Yes. Good, everyone. Sammi brings up a good point--by giving others the opportunity for knowledge, he may give them freedom, true?

Is that still true for us today?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Equality is fighting him self, his choice, his individuality, and of course The Golden One. i believe if he actually fights than it is a losing fight he would not be going up against another person he is going against a whole society and a way of life that has been changed to this for some unknown reason.

  29. 1.) From the few chapters that we've read in this book, Equality believes in intelligence, education, individuality, and creativity. He wants to get away from every rule and guideline and just be his own self. He does not care about what other people want he cares about himself.

2.) Equality has learned that by following others, he is not helping himself. He learned that to be individual is what will help him go farther.

3.) Equality is fighting for rights, education, and for freedom. He wants to live his life by doing what he wants to and not what someone chooses for him. I believe he will win this fight, but not by doing it the way the council wants him to.

4.) The council will definitley sustain Equality in this fight, because someone is trying to fight their power and live by rules other than theirs. The council will lose their control.

5.) Equality will try and bring freedom and peace to others by showing that you can be something other than what the council wants you to be.

6.) I want to know what Equality will do with his life. . . Will he find freedom?
    Will he go back?
    Will he have followers?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I thinks he wants that even if hes not a scholar that he has the potential to be one and wants to have the individual choice of if he want to be one or not. hes not even getting the choice of what he wants to do or what he wants to live for.

    ReplyDelete
  31. He believes in freedom and that everyone should be personal instead of all the same.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think he definitely values love and knowledge because he loves the golden one and he wants others to get more education about things.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't think equality has materials and such in the forest to be able to invent some other things, but might be able to make useful living stuff. Nobody goes in the uncharted forest, so i don't believe that they will find him to kick him out of the society and even if they did find him, i think they will just kill him, not throw him out.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Do you think anyone will help Equality?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Equality is fighting for the right to move forward in the sciences. To make the lives of man easier and to bring the power of nature to mans control. But Equality is also fighting for the right to be an individual. That man should be individuals and not controlled by the fear that rules them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. he believes that all people should be able to do what ever they want in reason, regardless of any circumstanes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1. I think Athem believes in individuality and the right to come up with your own ideas and thoughts, and we shall all be treated equal and join/ come together as one.
    2. He has learned that sometimes life isn't fair and that makes him believe that all people are created equal and we should all have the same rights.
3.Equality is fighting for his rights for his own thoughts and ideas, and as of right now it is a loosing battle, but I think soon enough he will come out with a victory by the end of the book.
    5. I think he will sacrifice his life for others as long as he tries his hardest to believe in himself and stay to his beliefs.

    ReplyDelete
  38. yes. i believe his friends will help him

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1.) Equality believes in being able to be an individual and being able to be free. He believes that no one should be able to tell him what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Equality wants his independence and pride, and the only way to do that is to stand up and fight for it. He realizes how much this affects him and how much he wants to preserve his rights as a human being.
2.) He has learned that life is precious and he just can't waste it. This influences his beliefs because he knows that the only way to live a happy and healthy life is to be willing to stand up for what you believe in.
4.) What will sustain Equality from his fight is the government and the hostage of not being able to live. He can't fight if he has to follow the rules and has to be under command of the government.
5.) I think he will try and help the others and try to gain their freedom and rights as human beings.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Equality has learned that life is not always best living to work only for others. This influences what he believes because if he this he believes everyone should be an individual and it means that he is an individual and that he is already breaking the laws of the land which forces him to run away

    ReplyDelete
  41. joe... i think the golden one will love his light bulb, but i dont think the society will be as accepting as her. this is because they are so used to thinking the same as their brothers and not of their own. one the contrary, they might be just as curious as equailty and fight against the government. maaybe they just arent showing it know.

    ReplyDelete
  42. by giving others knowledge other people might be scared of what will happen to them it they get cough with the law or the law might change and give everyone more freedom

    ReplyDelete
  43. He doesn't value love over knowledge because he left the Golden One in order to learn more and have more knowledge. In the book it said that he would never see her again but he wanted to still go to the council and show them the light-box. Then when he was caught he was worried about never seeing the Golden One again, but wanted to teach the people more.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1. I think he believes that everyone should be able to be an individual, and that being different is a good thing because people should be able to make their own choices and not have to live their life like everyone else is or by what other people tell you to live like.

    3. I think Equality is fighting for the opportunity for people to be different. I think it might be a losing fight because it seems like he is the only one in the community who believes in individuality, so if he gets caught he will most likely get killed like the Transgressor did.

    4. I think that he will do a lot for others. I think that even if there are people in the community that don't like him or that don't believe in what he does, he will try to enlighten them with his beliefs and try to befriend them and help them out, like he did with the Golden One, he didn't even know her but he was kind to her and became a friend to her.

  45. Why did it take twenty people to invent the candle?

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1 i think he believes in being an individual.2.he has learned that he wasn't really living life. he's fighting for indavidualism.

    ReplyDelete
  47. why did he think that it was a good idea to bring is light the the council?

    ReplyDelete
  48. nick he thought that they would accept the idea and that his invention would help his "fellow brothers"

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think that he will run away from this place he lives in completely because now hes in the forest and theres no way he will go back there.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that Equality will run away with the Golden One and they will make others realize that true happiness is being yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Equality, believes in the all mighty "I" that there is individualism. He has learned that in life you need to be able to take risks, and sometimes even rebel against "the system" and then you will learn and do the greater good from it. Equality is fighting for freedom, and some points his life. He will win the fight because fighting for freedom can never lose. His drive for this freedom will sustain him. He will try to convince others, and if they do not come, he will leave them if he can not convince them. My question is what is his influence on others?
