5th Equality--what does he believe?

Think about the "This I believe" essays we've heard, and the ideas you read about in Anthem.

In thinking about Equality,

1. What would you say he believes?
2. What has he learned about life and how does this influence his beliefs?
3. Jackie Robinson said one must be willing to fight for what is good. What is Equality fighting for? Will it be a losing fight, do you think?
4. What will sustain him in his fight?
5. What will he do for others, do you think?
6. What other questions do you have, from your reading last night?

  11. 1.I would say that Equality definitely believes in individualism even though he may not necessarily know exactly what it means. Through his knowledge he has sorta discovered himself and what kind of personality he has, which is basically the same thing as individualism.

    2. He has learned that life is not fair and now he believes that it is better for him to be alone.
    3. Equality is fighting for science and truth, but mostly science.
    4. The thing that will sustain him are his scientific discoveries.
    5. He will put the community before his own life, as shown when he says that it is fine if he is killed as long as the community got its light.
    6. Why did Equality believe that the Council of Scholars would make an excaption for him?
Why does he care so much about the box that his own life didn't matter to him.

  15. 3. Equality is fighting for the right to be his own person and for freedom. He also wants to make his own decisions as in who to love and what job to have. I think it will be a losing fight because he is standing up for his beliefs. Since he believes things that are against the rules he will be killed And unless someone else carries on what Equality believes, and stands up for the right to be an individual, then it will be a losing fight.

  16. I think that if equality was to write a This I Belive essay that it would be diffrent form the first couple of chapters. I think that hhe would now say he blives in freedom and uniqueness and more individualty then he had before. I think that he now wants to express his thoughts through writting. He now has strong belifes.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Equality believes in individuality and that one man or woman can make a difference. He believes in his lightbulb. He believes in freedom and that government should allow one to be successful.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think he believes in individuality and creativeness. I think he believes in living up to your potential and no one but you can decide what your potential is. I think he believes in knowledge and ffriendship and love.

  19. Do you, James, think he'd choose science over love? Is knowledge more important than Liberty?

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. I think Equality believes in Love, i think this because of his feelings for liberty. I think he believes in individuality and freedom because of his recklessness on his societies rules and his lack of fear towards them, he also seems to not care about the punishment.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @james, then make it just a little deep ok?

    ReplyDelete
  22. He thinks that life is not fair so he decides to go on his own tto see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  23. equality is fighting for his self right and freedom to his beliefs

    ReplyDelete
  24. When Jackie Robinson was talking, you could tell by the content of how he was speaking that even though he was a "all-star" or a professional, he still treated people the same if they were poor or rich. The reason for this is because he went through racism, the poverty, and he has a family to relate.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think Equality will try to get other people to go and push towards individuality.

    ReplyDelete
  26. McKenna, you and I are thinking along the same lines. Maybe we can summarize our ideas to say he wants the freedom of CHOICE. Maddie, I'm intrigued by your idea that he'll have to be martyred for his beliefs. Is it still reasonable to fight for something knowing you won't enjoy the fruits of your labor?

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. Equality believes in science, making his own decisions, being an individual with emotions, bravery and standing up for these beliefs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i think that he is fighting for freedom and to be different. and science, i think he will win by the time the book is over.

    ReplyDelete
  29. For others I think that he will do almost anything beacause he is growing as a person and now wants to show he can stand on his own. I think that he wants to give and share his ideas with others.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Considering that Equality has more of a chance of winning Liberty over science i think he will choose Science because it is more of a risk and he is a man to take the biggest risks

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Kackerman: To answer the earlier question...
"Do you, James, think he'd choose science over love? Is knowledge more important than Liberty?"

I think he would, now that he is in the Uncharted Forest. At the end of Chapter 7, he decides that she should foget about him now that he is in the forest. And the science causedd him to go into the forest, so yes, he would choose science over love.

  32. 4. The thing that will sustain him in his fight is the possiblilty that freedom for him is coming,

    ReplyDelete
  33. Melissa, really cool idea. So, ultimately, his beliefs are more important than his emotions...I think that makes sense based upon how he was raised.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think that the scientific discoveries will.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. I think he believes in freedom, individuality, and curiousity.
    2. he learned that life isnt fair and there is much more to it than he is exposed to. i think it pushes him more to fight for what he believes in.
    3. He is fighting for a life of his own and i think if he fights the battle by himself then he will be unsuccessful but if he gets others to follow him and his ideas, then a revolution would be possible.
    4. i think that his beliefs will sustain him in the fight because his beliefs are what drive his life so he will fight for as long as necessary to complete his life.
5.i think he will help them in their journey as well but if it gets in the way of his dreams i dont think he will help.

  36. 2. Equality has learned that to be truly happy you should do what makes you happy even though in someone else's eyes it is wrong. In his case he always followed the rules and was told he was happy, but he never actually was until he started to discover electricity and started to do what he desired

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think he will do anything for others. Although he is very independent, he will do anything for the benefit of others. For example he tried to better everyones' lives for his invention

    ReplyDelete
  38. 1.I think equality believes in using his thoughts to help the better of his socie ty and kind of "sacrifice" himself for the benefit of others and the "future of mankind"
    5. I think he in the end will prove to the Council that even though he is a street sweeper he is still capable of doing what the other people are as well!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. 5. i think that he will show others how to be different.

    ReplyDelete
  40. i beleave that equality will lead people to a revol;kution.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I feel like Equality is fighting for his own personality in a place that does not allow it and he finds as he is on his "quest" he remembers that last person who has has a joyful personality was burned at the stake

    ReplyDelete
  42. Equality does believe in science but I don't think he would give up love for it.

    ReplyDelete

  45. Equality is fighting for his right to have the job he wants. To live his life the way he wants. He is fighting for individualism. Equality is fighting for freedom, for the right to chose how he wants to live his life.

    ReplyDelete
  46. equality beleaves in induvidality

  47. 1. Equality believes mostly in individualality, wisdom, and freedom.
    2. He has learned that in life you can't always folow the rules if you want to be happy. You have to do whats best for you and the people you love.
    3. Equality is fighting for the things he believes in. By fighting for individuality he isn't afraid to be himself and do what he likes. By fighting for wisdom he isn't afraid to explore his questions and thoughts to find the answers. By fighting for freedom he isn't afraid to proclaim what should be and what is right.
    4. In his fight just his faith and strong willed attitude will get him through.
    5. I think he will be willing to risk his life for others and risk his own freedom, wisdom, and individualality for the future of others.
    6. What will happen to Liberty?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think hes laearned that life isnt always abou the whole. he has to save something for himself to.

    ReplyDelete
  49. are there such things as martyrs in his world?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that his beliefs will keep him strong in the long run and will become a stronger indivisual

  51. The society in ANTHEM does not let anyone be different and succeed in their own way. Equality is intelligent and into science, and he wants to be a Scholar. But he has been assigned to be a Street Sweeper. He is different and he knows that he belongs somewhere else. Equality believes that there is much more to the world than what he knows and he wants to find out about it. Equality also believes in love. He loves the Golden One.

    ReplyDelete
  52. He has learned that his life wont change if he doesnt do anything about it and that is why i believe he is trying to change things

    ReplyDelete
  53. @madeleine but how, where's the evidence on your thought?

    ReplyDelete
  54. 1. I think Equality believes in individuality. Hes discovering not everyone is the same. The Council tells people how they should live and Equality knows theres more to the world then what he is told.
    2. Equality learns theres more to life then what he knows. Theres knowledge that has been discovered. For example the light. The light he made was better then the candles. Equality wants to think thoughts that are sins and do things hes been told that are sins because he wants to be himself.
    3. Equality is fighting to be himself.

  55. Brandon says:
I thingk Equality is fighting for freedom and respect. I thingk he could win the fight it just dependes on how many others join him on the rebelion if everyone joins him.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So we start once again my friends.....

    ReplyDelete
  57. I thingk that he belives in the right to feelings because he has so manny feeling bottled up inside that he has to wright them down and hide his wrighting to. If they find out what he is doing he will be Killed. But I wonder if he would be smileing like thouse men in his past. Will he stop his belifes and ceep quiet or will he take action I hope he takes some action but I also hope he dosen't try and do it him self.

  58. His beliefs is stronger individual

    ReplyDelete
  59. 1. He believes in science, love, individualism, and freedom.

    ReplyDelete
  60. 2. He has learned that life isnt always fair and in order to be happy you might have to risk getting in trouble and break the rules to get what you want and be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Do animals exist in the uncharted forest? If so does Equality know they exist? What will he encounter in the forest? Will he return to get Libery?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Now that Equality is getting a better perspective on how he wasn't granted independence, wouldnt he realize that the Council has been putting false thoughts into the societies mind? Therefore, should he really trust everything they say? Why doesnt he try going into the uncharted forest to see the truath for himself?

    ReplyDelete
  63. 2. He has learned that not everything that comes from the group is good and not everything that comes from the individual is evil. He learned that men and women can have a special bond. He learned that he can survive without the government and the counsil.

    6. Will he ever go back to the society. Do other societies exist that he can go to. If he doesn't return, what will become of the members of the society?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Equality believs in freedom and individualism, he thinks that you should be able to feel your own emotions and be different from all the people surounding you. The freedom he is fighting for is the right to choose your own job and decide what you are good at and what your not; live your own life the way you want too.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Equality has learned that there is more to life than what is being to taught to them. He now knows about what is our there. he is an intelligent person curious to discover new things therefore, this effects his beliefs of how the society works and where he has been placed. He thinks he should be in a different place than the street sweepers which is where his belief of freedom comes in.
