Ibis 6th hour: Questioning while we read

While we read "The Scarlet Ibis," we'll practice good questioning techniques. As you have a question, please post it to this blog. When another finds the answer to the question or has a follow-up question, or an idea that relates to the question, he/she will post those thoughts.
Please use the handout from the webpage to guide your thinking. Be respectful and specific on this blog--use predictions, background knowledge, and inferences to come to your conclusions. Link your ideas back to the text.

    2. five o'clocks: flowers that open and close based upon time of day
    3. caul: filmy layer that covers a baby's head sometimes after birth
    4. speak softly names of dead: a superstition that suggests we should not say the names of the dead to keep their ghosts from haunting us

    ReplyDelete
  20. what does he mean by saying "it was bad enough having an invalid brother"?

    ReplyDelete
  21. well, birds do symbolize a lot of different important things like peace, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why did miss Leedie send a letter to Pres. Wilson every day?

    ReplyDelete
  23. caleb a caul is a membrane surrounding the head of a child a birth.

    ReplyDelete
  24. a mahogany coffin is a box made to put a person in when they are dead and mahogany is a type of wood.

    ReplyDelete
  25. What does the title "Scarlet Ibis" have to do with a bleeding tree?

    ReplyDelete
  26. is the narrator crazy by saying he is going to kill his brother with a pillow?

    ReplyDelete
  27. what was wrong with his brother Doodle?

    ReplyDelete
  28. A bleeding tree is a reference to a tree that is found south. It is called a bleeding tree because it emits a milky substance when a branch is broken off from it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. why would he contemplate on killing his younger brother???

    ReplyDelete
  30. how much money does old Miss Leedie spend on stamps to send a letter to President Wilson a year?

    ReplyDelete
  31. A mahogany coffin is just like a regular coffin but it's made out of mahogany wood.

    ReplyDelete
  32. by having an invalid brother it means that he's mentally challenged

    ReplyDelete
  33. why would he want to plan on killing his brother even if he is invalid??

    ReplyDelete
  34. who exactly is the narrator? maybe a brother?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Great job answering questions and asking good questions.
I'm noticing that all of our stories have to do with loss or anger or tragedy of some kind.
Perhaps these feelings are common to all people, no matter where we come from or what time we live in?

    ReplyDelete
  36. If you have a question about a word with a number next to it, it has the definition at the bottom of the page

    ReplyDelete
  37. What does the narrator mean by the name William Armstrong is tying a big tail on a small kite?

    ReplyDelete
  38. if letting William crawl around could kill him why did they let him do it?

    ReplyDelete
  39. In the story it says,"when he was finally three months old, Momma and Daddy decided they might as well name him." But why would they wait so long to name the little brother, even if he died they might as well have name for him to remember him by.

    ReplyDelete
  40. andthat its tough to have a brother like that

    ReplyDelete
  41. Cali I think that means he has a big heart and that he has potential to do great things if he wants to

    ReplyDelete
  42. What's wrong with William? Why can't he do the things his brother does?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Is the narrator really going to kill Doodle by smothering him with a pillow?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Is it possible that wanting to kill someone, a seemingly cruel act, could actually show love because you don't want that person to suffer anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why would it matter if he smiled? How does that mean he is all there?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Why is Doodle sick or disabled ? What happened to him ?

    ReplyDelete
  47. which character is telling the story?

    ReplyDelete
  48. why is it called Old Woman Swamp?

    ReplyDelete
  49. well, he probably wants to kill his brother because his invalid brother might be getting all the attention/ is sufferring and he doesn't want to see him die like that/ or because having a mental sibling is very difficult. you have more responsibilities to take care of and it is hard.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that they just thought it would be best if doodle had died and not had to live a life of constantly being sick and weak.

    ReplyDelete
  51. will doodle ever be able to run? how far can he go phisically like jumping and stuff before he has to stop?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I believe Doodle may have cerebral palsy, so he would not be expected to live long.
By smiling, could it shows that he's growing and developing?

Perhaps by not naming him, it actually protects their hearts because giving him a name makes him real and truly a part of the family?

    ReplyDelete
  53. He might be planning to kill his brother because he thinks he is in pain because he is invalid and wants to end his life and put him out of misery. Or he thinks having an invalid brother is hurting him in someway and doesn't like that feeling of it so he is going to kill him.

    ReplyDelete
  54. why is he talking about renaming??

    ReplyDelete
  55. he felt as if he could do anything and not be wrong or make flaws.

    ReplyDelete
  56. maybe its a type of flower or something... cuz this whole book has been about flowers

    ReplyDelete
  57. Piazza--Italian for courtyard or enclosed porch.
    Gathering place.

    ReplyDelete
  58. naming something/somebody makes it way harder to get over if they die than if you hadn't. naming somebody/something makes them apart of the world, makes them a part of a big picture and makes them yours. You aren't going to be close to somebody you don't even know their name.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Evan, are you talking about the piazza?

    ReplyDelete
  60. what would have happened to this family if doodle had died as an infant?

    ReplyDelete
  61. So he doest want his brother to be miserable????

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think the answer to what does the activity on expectations that we did have to do with the story is Doodle isn't expected much but his brother is. He has to take Doodle where ever he wanted to go.

    ReplyDelete
  63. ya, i was. but mrs. ackerman already answered that so nevermind

    ReplyDelete
  64. im confused on this..doodle is his brother right??

    ReplyDelete
  65. the brother doesnt seem to be very nice to his "challenged" brother

    ReplyDelete
  66. that seems like the parents have no hope at all in doodle being alive long, considering the fact that they have a coffin already made for him and just waiting there.

    ReplyDelete
  67. What does it mean when it says "He was a sight."?

    ReplyDelete
  68. yeah travis doodle is the narrators brother

    ReplyDelete
  69. what does he mean when he says that they will grow old together, live in a an old woman swamp, and pick dog-tongue for a living?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Good thinking about high expectations--one brother has all the pressure and the other has no pressure.
Do you think it's okay that the parents expect nothing out of Doodle because he's handicapped?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Thats true Courtney he doesn't seem to be very nice to his challenged brother but later this being mean to try to make him walk will help him walk.

    ReplyDelete
  72. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  73. ok nervermind joe told me and now hes laughing at me haha.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I believe that if they already have his death and coffin ready and planned out, then they should just take him out of his misery and suffering already and just let him go because they are going to have to do that already anyways :(

    ReplyDelete
  75. Doodle is his nickname--goes back to the question about renaming; maybe William seems too formal, so he's been given a nickname to make him more part of the family?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think the parents should at least try to make doodle have goals because then they are making him feel like he's not even worth a life if they expect nothing, and care really nothing about him, if they don't take much interest in him

    ReplyDelete
  77. It seems that the older brother had high expectations for Doodle when he taught him how to walk

    ReplyDelete
  78. So, still doodle would be an awesome nick name.

    ReplyDelete
  79. wait wait wait, is the main charcter a girl or a boy?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Michelle--maybe that goes back to the issue about expectations. Just because his parents don't expect a lot doesn't mean that his brother can't be helpful and supportive to him.
Also--Andrew: when he's talking about Old Woman Swamp, I'm wondering if he means that he feels burdened or held back by the fact that his brother will need constant support and care?
Kanchan--a saint is another word for a holy person, similar to an angel.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Why would the brother want to cry, he should be happy that he helped his little brother learn to walk when everyone thought it was impossible?

    ReplyDelete
  82. i agree with Eric because if a child has no support for his parents then he wont have any motivation so he wont try to be anything or do anything.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hi, sixth hour. Doing such a great job.

    ReplyDelete
  84. What is dog-tongue? The story says, "We decided that when we were grown we'd live in Old Woman Swamp and pick dog-tongue for a living."

    ReplyDelete
  85. it seems as the story goes on, the narrator treats doodle more and more like a regular person, and having him do regular activities with him

    ReplyDelete
  86. I don't see what "Scarlet Ibis" has to do with this story. .

    ReplyDelete
  87. Andrew--do you have an idea for Morgan?

    ReplyDelete
  88. but his older brother gives him motivation

    ReplyDelete
  89. Kara, I think thats because he was tired of taking Doodle everywhere. I mean if you had to take one person every where with you wouldn't you get tired of him.

    ReplyDelete
  90. no support from his parents sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  91. we should get like 10 points towards a privilege for being so good than right? :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. the ibis symbolises what would happen to doodle

    ReplyDelete
  93. i think its because it his brother that is like this and cant be normal or is happy crying he and his brother achieved something everyone thought was impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I think that Doodle isn't expected to do anything because he is handicapped. Everyone thought he was going too die. For those who didn't they thought he would just lay in his bed for the rest of his life.

    ReplyDelete
  95. he was crying in joy that his brother could finally walk, he is happy for his little brother and that when no one said it could be done and he helped his little brother walk

    ReplyDelete
  96. i think its alright that Doodle has really low expectations because he is handi capped and probably wont live long so just let him enjoy the rest of his life

  112. Watch language, friends.
Dix Hill--a setting in the story.
Why he might be getting sick: he already has a weakened condition?

    ReplyDelete
  113. I'm tired! and this story is confusing? @-@

    ReplyDelete
  114. yeah guys jeez listen to Mrs. Ackerman, you can't just say random things, oh and hey Joe.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Why did doodle's decide to start being nice to him?

    ReplyDelete
  116. i dont think it was smart to try to get doodle to swim.....

    ReplyDelete
  117. True, Evan.
Caitlin, a bleeding tree is a pine tree that "bleeds" sap. Could this be a metaphor for something or someone in the story?
Drew--thinking about the reasons for being nice to another after we've been cruel...our own guilt perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Mrs. Ackerman is an amazing teacher, best english teacher i have...

    ReplyDelete
  119. why did they try to get doodle to swim?? shouldn't they have known something would happen??

    ReplyDelete
  120. what caitlin of course the nariator isn't a creep he's like a 6 year old boy when doodle was born

    ReplyDelete
  121. Where is the cotton farm?
    What season was it"?
Is it a happy time in the story or a bad time inn the story?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Why did doodle like to lie so much?

    ReplyDelete
  123. my chair is squeaky, it is interrupting in my learning environment

    ReplyDelete
  124. Scarlet ibis is a bird and what else?
The birds, Nick, seem pretty important in this story...black birds mean bad luck usually.
How might this apply to the story?

    ReplyDelete
  125. even i agree why did they try to get doodle to swim

    ReplyDelete
  126. what im not that far in the story why would they try to make him swim?!!

    ReplyDelete
  127. thats like throwing a rock into water and hoping it would swim...

    ReplyDelete
  128. ;0
Swimming, swimming up stream...just keep swimming.
    What might the metaphor be?
How are swimming and life related?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Why would he be intrested in marrying his father?

    ReplyDelete
  130. ya, id think so travis... he has a condition, who lets their lil kid swim when they have a life threatening condition??? not smart :)

    ReplyDelete
  131. In the story, Doddle's brother makes it seem like it's a bad thing to be different from other people at school. He wants Doodle to fit in perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Brendan it is a bad time right around WW2 or so

    ReplyDelete
  133. I agree with Evan. It is kind of like that

    ReplyDelete
  134. its hard to fit in perfectly when he is different.

    ReplyDelete
  135. well you cant exactly fit in with a name like doodle.... haha

    ReplyDelete
  136. What does the little brother die from? I mean how are you following some one at one moment but when you sit down to rest you start to bleed from the mouth. What desiese does that?

    ReplyDelete
  137. ackerman- swimming and life are related because most of the time in swimming when doing a really long or hard set you really want to stop but u just have to keep going and endure through it
that reminds me of "The Most Dangerous Game"

    ReplyDelete
  138. The brother should have never made doodle row the boat back to the horsehead landing.

    ReplyDelete
  139. what do they mean by the ibis lit into a bleeding tree

    ReplyDelete
  140. Sammi has a great idea; in thinking about the treatment of the mentally ill and handicapped, even until the 1980's, we need to realize that these children were usually institutionalized.
Doodle's brother hopes he'll be able to fit in, seem normal in society.
    Andrew--thanks for the props. :)
Drew--dog tongue is a plant, usually used in cooking or for medicinal purposes. Probably slang.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I'm going to name my kid Doodle now, Doodle Carmelo Jensen, sounds good to me

    ReplyDelete
  142. I think the narrator is being mean to Doodle! How come he is making him swim??!!

    ReplyDelete
  143. y would the title of the book be named after a bird that barely had anything to do with the story?

    ReplyDelete
  144. Zach i think he just got sick and the swimming, running and the storm really didn't help him any.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Yes, correct, Amelia. But, you are also right, Evan. It would be difficult to pretend to be normal because then a family or parents would ignore a child's needs. Perhaps the parents have done this?

    ReplyDelete
  146. Well the bird also had to do with symbolizing doodle when he died.

    ReplyDelete
