What's an ibis?
ReplyDeleteIs an ibis a bird?
ReplyDeleteWhy is the title "The Scarlet Ibis"?
ReplyDeleteWhat does the ibis symbolize?
ReplyDeleteWhat does the expectations activity have to do with the story?
ReplyDeleteIs this a real story?
ReplyDeleteWhat did the author choose a scarlet ibis for its title?
ReplyDeleteWhat's the relationship in the story between love and cruelty?
ReplyDeleteWhat is a bleeding tree and how does it apply to this story?
ReplyDeleteAn ibis is a bird but it could also be a flower
ReplyDeletewhat's a purple phlox..?
ReplyDeleteI think its a flower. it sounds like a flower name
ReplyDeleteWhat will happen to William Armstrong if he is able to live through his younger years?
ReplyDeleteWhat is a caul?
ReplyDeleteWhat does it mean when it says "Speak softly in the names of our dead"?
ReplyDeletescarlet is like a bright red color. is a scarlet ibis like a bright red bird/flower?
ReplyDeleteWhat time period does this story take place in?
ReplyDeletewho is narrating the story?
ReplyDeletewhy does it say " The five o'clocks by the chimmney still marked time."
ReplyDeleteI think it is a flower, unless a Ibis bird is red.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sam I think a purple phlox is a flower.
ReplyDeletewhy would the author pick a bird to write about?
ReplyDeleteWhat's a mahogany coffin?
ReplyDeleteWhere does this take place?
ReplyDeletewhy was doodle a disappointment??
ReplyDeleteWhere is this story take place in? Does that have anything to do with the subject of the story?
ReplyDeletewho is Ms. Leedie?
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to Doodle?
ReplyDeletehow does an ibis apply to the story?
ReplyDeleteIf the ibis is a bird how is it lit?
ReplyDeleteA few answers:
ReplyDelete1. time period: right after WWII
2. five o'clocks: flowers that open and close based upon time of day
3. caul: filmy layer that covers a baby's head sometimes after birth
4. speak softly names of dead: a superstition that suggests we should not say the names of the dead to keep their ghosts from haunting us
what does he mean by saying "it was bad enough having an invalid brother"?
ReplyDeletethe story is set in 1918
ReplyDeletewell, birds do symbolize a lot of different important things like peace, etc.
ReplyDeleteWhy did miss Leedie send a letter to Pres. Wilson every day?
ReplyDeletecaleb a caul is a membrane surrounding the head of a child a birth.
ReplyDeletea mahogany coffin is a box made to put a person in when they are dead and mahogany is a type of wood.
ReplyDeleteWhat does the title "Scarlet Ibis" have to do with a bleeding tree?
ReplyDeleteis the narrator crazy by saying he is going to kill his brother with a pillow?
ReplyDeletewhat was wrong with his brother Doodle?
ReplyDeleteA bleeding tree is a reference to a tree that is found south. It is called a bleeding tree because it emits a milky substance when a branch is broken off from it.
ReplyDeletewhy would he contemplate on killing his younger brother???
ReplyDeletehow much money does old Miss Leedie spend on stamps to send a letter to President Wilson a year?
ReplyDeleteA mahogany coffin is just like a regular coffin but it's made out of mahogany wood.
ReplyDeleteby having an invalid brother it means that he's mentally challenged
ReplyDeletewhy would he want to plan on killing his brother even if he is invalid??
ReplyDeletewho exactly is the narrator? maybe a brother?
ReplyDeleteGreat job answering questions and asking good questions.
ReplyDeleteI'm noticing that all of our stories have to do with loss or anger or tragedy of some kind.
Perhaps these feelings are common to all people, no matter where we come from or what time we live in?
If you have a question about a word with a number next to it, it has the definition at the bottom of the page
ReplyDeleteHow would the strain kill him?
ReplyDeleteWhat does the narrator mean by the name William Armstrong is tying a big tail on a small kite?
ReplyDeleteif letting William crawl around could kill him why did they let him do it?
ReplyDeleteIn the story it says,"when he was finally three months old, Momma and Daddy decided they might as well name him." But why would they wait so long to name the little brother, even if he died they might as well have name for him to remember him by.
ReplyDeleteandthat its tough to have a brother like that
ReplyDeleteCali I think that means he has a big heart and that he has potential to do great things if he wants to
ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with William? Why can't he do the things his brother does?
ReplyDeleteIs the narrator really going to kill Doodle by smothering him with a pillow?
ReplyDeleteIs it possible that wanting to kill someone, a seemingly cruel act, could actually show love because you don't want that person to suffer anymore?
ReplyDeletehow old is the narrator?
ReplyDeleteWhy would it matter if he smiled? How does that mean he is all there?
ReplyDeleteWhy is Doodle sick or disabled ? What happened to him ?
ReplyDeletewhich character is telling the story?
ReplyDeletewhy is it called Old Woman Swamp?
ReplyDeletewell, he probably wants to kill his brother because his invalid brother might be getting all the attention/ is sufferring and he doesn't want to see him die like that/ or because having a mental sibling is very difficult. you have more responsibilities to take care of and it is hard.
ReplyDeleteI think that they just thought it would be best if doodle had died and not had to live a life of constantly being sick and weak.
ReplyDeletewill doodle ever be able to run? how far can he go phisically like jumping and stuff before he has to stop?
ReplyDeleteI believe Doodle may have cerebral palsy, so he would not be expected to live long.
ReplyDeleteBy smiling, could it shows that he's growing and developing?
Perhaps by not naming him, it actually protects their hearts because giving him a name makes him real and truly a part of the family?
i agree with michelle
ReplyDeleteHe might be planning to kill his brother because he thinks he is in pain because he is invalid and wants to end his life and put him out of misery. Or he thinks having an invalid brother is hurting him in someway and doesn't like that feeling of it so he is going to kill him.
ReplyDeleteWhats a piazza?
ReplyDeletewhy is he talking about renaming??
ReplyDeletehe felt as if he could do anything and not be wrong or make flaws.
ReplyDeletemaybe its a type of flower or something... cuz this whole book has been about flowers
ReplyDeletePiazza--Italian for courtyard or enclosed porch.
ReplyDeleteGathering place.
naming something/somebody makes it way harder to get over if they die than if you hadn't. naming somebody/something makes them apart of the world, makes them a part of a big picture and makes them yours. You aren't going to be close to somebody you don't even know their name.
ReplyDeleteEvan, are you talking about the piazza?
ReplyDeletewhat would have happened to this family if doodle had died as an infant?
ReplyDeleteSo he doest want his brother to be miserable????
ReplyDeletewhat does saint mean?
ReplyDeletea piazza is an arched courtyard
ReplyDeleteI think the answer to what does the activity on expectations that we did have to do with the story is Doodle isn't expected much but his brother is. He has to take Doodle where ever he wanted to go.
ReplyDeleteya, i was. but mrs. ackerman already answered that so nevermind
ReplyDeleteim confused on this..doodle is his brother right??
ReplyDeletethe brother doesnt seem to be very nice to his "challenged" brother
ReplyDeletethat seems like the parents have no hope at all in doodle being alive long, considering the fact that they have a coffin already made for him and just waiting there.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it mean when it says "He was a sight."?
ReplyDeleteyeah travis doodle is the narrators brother
ReplyDeletewhat kind of name is doodle..?
ReplyDeletewhat does he mean when he says that they will grow old together, live in a an old woman swamp, and pick dog-tongue for a living?
ReplyDeleteGood thinking about high expectations--one brother has all the pressure and the other has no pressure.
ReplyDeleteDo you think it's okay that the parents expect nothing out of Doodle because he's handicapped?
Thats true Courtney he doesn't seem to be very nice to his challenged brother but later this being mean to try to make him walk will help him walk.

ReplyDeletewhats Dix Hill?
ReplyDeleteok nervermind joe told me and now hes laughing at me haha.
ReplyDeleteI believe that if they already have his death and coffin ready and planned out, then they should just take him out of his misery and suffering already and just let him go because they are going to have to do that already anyways :(
ReplyDeleteDoodle is an awesome name Evan!
ReplyDeleteDoodle is his nickname--goes back to the question about renaming; maybe William seems too formal, so he's been given a nickname to make him more part of the family?
ReplyDeleteno i wasn't
ReplyDeleteI think the parents should at least try to make doodle have goals because then they are making him feel like he's not even worth a life if they expect nothing, and care really nothing about him, if they don't take much interest in him
ReplyDeletehi Mrs. Ackerman :)
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the older brother had high expectations for Doodle when he taught him how to walk
ReplyDeleteSo, still doodle would be an awesome nick name.
ReplyDeletewait wait wait, is the main charcter a girl or a boy?
ReplyDeleteMichelle--maybe that goes back to the issue about expectations. Just because his parents don't expect a lot doesn't mean that his brother can't be helpful and supportive to him.
ReplyDeleteAlso--Andrew: when he's talking about Old Woman Swamp, I'm wondering if he means that he feels burdened or held back by the fact that his brother will need constant support and care?
Kanchan--a saint is another word for a holy person, similar to an angel.
oh, i see. thanx
ReplyDeleteWhy would the brother want to cry, he should be happy that he helped his little brother learn to walk when everyone thought it was impossible?
ReplyDeletei agree with Eric because if a child has no support for his parents then he wont have any motivation so he wont try to be anything or do anything.
ReplyDeleteHi, sixth hour. Doing such a great job.
ReplyDeleteWhat is dog-tongue? The story says, "We decided that when we were grown we'd live in Old Woman Swamp and pick dog-tongue for a living."
ReplyDeleteit seems as the story goes on, the narrator treats doodle more and more like a regular person, and having him do regular activities with him
ReplyDeletehe means tears of joy
ReplyDeleteI don't see what "Scarlet Ibis" has to do with this story. .
ReplyDeleteAndrew--do you have an idea for Morgan?
ReplyDeletebut his older brother gives him motivation
ReplyDeleteKara, I think thats because he was tired of taking Doodle everywhere. I mean if you had to take one person every where with you wouldn't you get tired of him.
ReplyDeleteno support from his parents sorry.
ReplyDeletewe should get like 10 points towards a privilege for being so good than right? :)
ReplyDeletethe ibis symbolises what would happen to doodle
ReplyDeletei think its because it his brother that is like this and cant be normal or is happy crying he and his brother achieved something everyone thought was impossible.
ReplyDeleteI think that Doodle isn't expected to do anything because he is handicapped. Everyone thought he was going too die. For those who didn't they thought he would just lay in his bed for the rest of his life.
ReplyDeletehe was crying in joy that his brother could finally walk, he is happy for his little brother and that when no one said it could be done and he helped his little brother walk
ReplyDeletei think its alright that Doodle has really low expectations because he is handi capped and probably wont live long so just let him enjoy the rest of his life
ReplyDeleteI agree with Amelia

ReplyDeleteMrs. Ackerman Sammi is being very harsh and mean to me, she is criticizing me, in a very mean, and uncalled for way. I may cry.

ReplyDeleteWatch language, friends.
ReplyDeleteDix Hill--a setting in the story.
Why he might be getting sick: he already has a weakened condition?
I'm tired! and this story is confusing? @-@
ReplyDeleteyeah guys jeez listen to Mrs. Ackerman, you can't just say random things, oh and hey Joe.
ReplyDeletebleeding tree?
ReplyDeleteWhy did doodle's decide to start being nice to him?
ReplyDeletehey eric!
ReplyDeleteTravis woooooooooow
ReplyDeletei dont think it was smart to try to get doodle to swim.....
ReplyDeletelook at #1 caitlin
ReplyDeleteWhat are dog-tongues?
ReplyDeleteis the nararrator a creep/
ReplyDeleteso the scarlet ibis is a bird!
ReplyDeletei <3 ENGLISH.
ReplyDeletewhy did the bird fall?
ReplyDeleteTrue, Evan.
ReplyDeleteCaitlin, a bleeding tree is a pine tree that "bleeds" sap. Could this be a metaphor for something or someone in the story?
Drew--thinking about the reasons for being nice to another after we've been cruel...our own guilt perhaps?
Mrs. Ackerman is an amazing teacher, best english teacher i have...
ReplyDeletewhy did they try to get doodle to swim?? shouldn't they have known something would happen??
ReplyDeletewhat caitlin of course the nariator isn't a creep he's like a 6 year old boy when doodle was born
ReplyDeleteWhere is the cotton farm?
ReplyDeleteWhat season was it"?
Is it a happy time in the story or a bad time inn the story?
Why did doodle like to lie so much?
ReplyDeletemy chair is squeaky, it is interrupting in my learning environment
ReplyDeleteScarlet ibis is a bird and what else?
ReplyDeleteThe birds, Nick, seem pretty important in this story...black birds mean bad luck usually.
How might this apply to the story?
even i agree why did they try to get doodle to swim
ReplyDeleteWhat is petunia?
ReplyDeletewhat im not that far in the story why would they try to make him swim?!!
ReplyDeletedrew really haha
ReplyDeletethats like throwing a rock into water and hoping it would swim...
ReplyDeletea petunia is a flower
ReplyDelete;0
ReplyDeleteSwimming, swimming up stream...just keep swimming.
What might the metaphor be?
How are swimming and life related?
Why would he be intrested in marrying his father?
ReplyDeleteya, id think so travis... he has a condition, who lets their lil kid swim when they have a life threatening condition??? not smart :)
ReplyDeleteIn the story, Doddle's brother makes it seem like it's a bad thing to be different from other people at school. He wants Doodle to fit in perfectly.
ReplyDeleteBrendan it is a bad time right around WW2 or so
ReplyDeleteI agree with Evan. It is kind of like that
ReplyDeletewhat is picking dog tongue?
ReplyDeleteits hard to fit in perfectly when he is different.
ReplyDeletewell you cant exactly fit in with a name like doodle.... haha
ReplyDeleteWhat does the little brother die from? I mean how are you following some one at one moment but when you sit down to rest you start to bleed from the mouth. What desiese does that?
ReplyDeleteackerman- swimming and life are related because most of the time in swimming when doing a really long or hard set you really want to stop but u just have to keep going and endure through it
ReplyDeletethat reminds me of "The Most Dangerous Game"
The brother should have never made doodle row the boat back to the horsehead landing.
ReplyDeletewhat do they mean by the ibis lit into a bleeding tree
ReplyDeleteSammi has a great idea; in thinking about the treatment of the mentally ill and handicapped, even until the 1980's, we need to realize that these children were usually institutionalized.
ReplyDeleteDoodle's brother hopes he'll be able to fit in, seem normal in society.
Andrew--thanks for the props. :)
Drew--dog tongue is a plant, usually used in cooking or for medicinal purposes. Probably slang.
I'm going to name my kid Doodle now, Doodle Carmelo Jensen, sounds good to me
ReplyDeleteI think the narrator is being mean to Doodle! How come he is making him swim??!!
ReplyDeletey would the title of the book be named after a bird that barely had anything to do with the story?
ReplyDeleteZach i think he just got sick and the swimming, running and the storm really didn't help him any.
ReplyDeleteYes, correct, Amelia. But, you are also right, Evan. It would be difficult to pretend to be normal because then a family or parents would ignore a child's needs. Perhaps the parents have done this?
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that Eric! ^^
ReplyDeleteWell the bird also had to do with symbolizing doodle when he died.
ReplyDelete
